Three months. One forsaken region. The Captain arrives with the king’s seal and the king’s silence — orders come by letter, and the king never does. You sit in his chair. You speak in his name. Whether you actually hold the authority you claim is a question the region will test.
Above the village of Withy, the Harrow band has held the forest for three years under Idony Hurst, and not one village has given her up. When the king’s gold wagon rolls through, she already knows where the gold is going: Withy, Coldwell, Marl. All of them.
Two villagers arrive with a grievance. You rule; one of them walks away happy. Thirty-one disputes, sixty-two endings. The village remembers every ruling you ever make. The Captain remembers none of them.
